PLEASE SUPPORT THE NEW MONASTICISM & NEW EVANGELIZATION: Help us rebuild the Church and preach the Gospel in service of the Pope.

"The Holy Scriptures do not know any distinctions," said St. John Chrysostom, "They enjoin that all lead the life of monks." All Christians, as the Gospel teaches us, are called to holiness, “to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect,” i.e., to be Saints, and all share in the mission and ministry of the Church for the building up of the Body of Christ and the salvation of souls.

Monasticism, throughout history, has been considered the barometer of the spiritual life of the Church; in the state which monastics existed, so existed the Church. Monasticism, as a way of Gospel life, can be lived––not only in monasteries, hermitages, and churches by religious and clerics––but by laymen who have interiorized the life of monks within the "sanctuary" and "cell" of their soul, and who then bring the monastery to the world.

CIMABUE SANTA CROCE CRUCIFIX BUTTON

This is one of Cimabue's early works, he painted it around 1265, before his journey to Rome in 1272. Cimabue, whose real name was Cenni di Pepo, was Giotto's master and was mainly famous for a later masterpiece: the crucifix in Santa Croce in Florence. But after the flood in 1966 in Florence, which partly destroyed the crucifix, this work has become more important. Here he brilliantly breaks away from the Byzantine style, not only in technique, but also in his more “humane” vision of the tragedy of Calvary: instead of a triumphant Christ, he paints a suffering Christ who carries the weight of the sin of man. He is, in fact, laying the basis for Giotto's great innnovations and announcing the Italian Renaissance style.

JESUS CHRIST PANTOCRATOR (SINAI) BUTTON

The iconic image of Christ Pantocrator ("Christ, Ruler of All") was one of the first images of Christ developed in the early Church and remains a central icon of Eastern Christians. In the half-length image, Christ holds the New Testament in his left hand and makes the gesture of teaching or of blessing with his right. The oldest known surviving example of the icon of Christ Pantocrator was painted in encaustic on panel in the sixth or seventh century, and survived the period of destruction of images during the Iconoclastic disputes that racked the Eastern church, 726 to 787 and 814 to 842, by being preserved in the remote desert of the Sinai, in Saint Catherine's Monastery.

THEOTOKOS PANAGIA OF THE PASSION (SINAI) BUTTON

This 1579 A.D. icon is of the “Panagia” (the Greek term for “All-Pure”) Virgin Mary for she was truly all pure and ever Virgin, for the catholic Church has taught in every generation of its history (from the Day of Pentecost) that Mary the Mother of God was pure from sin by her choice over her entire life. Icons of the Passion refer to the revelation to Christ of His coming Passion (rejection, beating, Crucifixion, and Death) at the end of His life, and here He looks up to see two angels showing Him the instruments of His Crucifixion. He holds the Virgin’s hand tightly, and his sandal falls off as His very real humanity recoils.

JESUS NOT-MADE-BY-HANDS BUTTON

The Icon of the Savior, image "Not-Made-By-Hands" is one of the earliest icons witnessed to by the Church. Acheiropoieta, literally "not-handmade", or Icons Not Made by Hand (and variants), are a particular kind of icon, ones that are alleged to have come into existence miraculously, not by a human painter. Invariably these are images of Jesus or the Virgin. The most notable examples are, in the Eastern church the Image of Edessa or Mandylion, and in the West, the Veil of Veronica and the Shroud of Turin.

JESUS DIVINE MERCY BUTTON

In the 1930's, Sister Maria Faustina received a message of mercy from Our Lord that she was told to spread throughout the world, a message of God's mercy to each person individually, and for humanity as a whole. Jesus asked that a picture be painted of him with the inscription: "Jesus, I Trust in You." She was asked to be a model of mercy to others, to live her entire life, in imitation of Christ's, as a sacrifice. She commissioned this painting in 1935, showing a red and a white light shining from Christ's Sacred Heart.

ST BENEDICT & THE HOLY RULE BUTTON

Girded with a faith, and the performance of good works, let us follow in Christ's path by the guidance of the Gospel; then we shall deserve to see him "who has called us into his kingdom." If we wish to attain a dwelling place in his kingdom, we shall not reach it unless we hasten there by our good deeds. Just as there exists an evil fervor, a bitter spirit, which divides us from God and leads us to hell, so there is a good fervor which sets us apart from evil inclinations and leads us toward God and eternal life. No one should follow what he considers to be good for himself, but rather what seems good for another. Let them put Christ before all else; and may he lead us all to everlasting life. -- from the Rule of Saint Benedict

ST NICHOLAS THE WONDER WORKER BUTTON

Saint Nicholas ("Victory of the People") (270 - 6 December 346) is the common name for Nicholas of Myra, a saint and Bishop of Myra (in Lycia, part of modern-day Turkey). Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as is common for early Christian saints. The historical Saint Nicholas is remembered and revered among Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He is also honoured by various Anglican and Lutheran churches. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, and children, and students in Greece, Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, the Republic of Macedonia, Slovakia, Serbia, Montenegro, Barranquilla, Bari, Amsterdam, Beit Jala, and Liverpool. HERMITAGE: ITS HERITAGE & CHALLENGE FOR THE FUTURE

Hermitage is a thorough and readable summary of the history of monasticism and a vision for a universal seraphic order of "monks" which includes the consecrated vowed religious as well as the married and lay monastic, the cloistered as well as those living in-the-world. With the emergence of the so-called "new monasticism", it is clear that the "life of monks" is not only for those who live within the monastery. Yet, it is crucial to properly understand where monasticism started and how it developed before we can contemplate its future and our place within it. Whether you're a monk or a layman, Abbot Columba Marmion, will help you understand the nature of the perfection to which God has called you. ETERNAL WISDOM FROM THE DESERT

In the fourth century, thousands of men and women fled into the Egyptian desert seeking to recapture the passion of the earliest Christians through lives of prayer and solitude. As records of the wisdom and purity of the "desert fathers and mothers" spread through the Roman Empire, Christians streamed to the caves of these desert hermits, seeking counsel on the interior life. The hermits' ascetic practices and wise words were a shining witness to a living faith that could be woven into the fabric of daily life. This volume contains Athanasius' famous The Life of St. Anthony, St. Jerome's The Life of Paul the Hermit, and the collected sayings of many of the desert fathers and mothers who teach us eternal wisdom for daily life.

CLOISTER TALKS

Cloister Talks is a series of glimpses into the author Jon Sweeney's decades-long friendships with Cistercian and Benedictine monks in various monasteries across the country. The contemplative way embodied by these communal brothers has been the single greatest source of guidance in Sweeney's journey of faith. Here he shares with poignant honesty the wisdom and insight for everyday living he has gained along the way.

Sweeney's conversations with monks engage various universal areas of life, including life, death, love, work, play, and spirituality. Readers will emerge with a deeper understanding of this ancient way of Christianity--a much-needed antidote to the hurry of contemporary life. The monastics who populate these pages have spent a combined century and a half in their sacred vocation. They hold the keys to many of the things we all yearn for: stillness, solitude, simplicity, contemplation, and clarity of purpose.

FINDING THE MONK WITHIN: GREAT MONASTIC VALUES FOR TODAY

Finding the Monk Within: Great Monastic Values for Today is a treasure for all interested in the enduring value of monasticism. The author shows how monasticism distills values fundamental to the lives of all Christians, such as faith, friendship, humility, mentoring, stability, action and contemplation, and above all, love of God and neighbor. "By studying the history of monasticism and its great heroes we come to realize that, for the Christian, much of what we call `monastic' is purely and simply what being a follower of Christ is all about, and that being a monk, whether inside monastic enclosures or outside `in the world,' is simply becoming the sort of person everyone ought to be, a person who unites action and contemplation in the care of souls," writes the author.

ST BENEDICT & ST THERESE: THE LITTLE RULE & THE LITTLE WAY

St. Benedict and St. Therese stand as two of the monumental figures in the history of the Western Church. Their impact on Christian thought cannot be underestimated, yet never before have they been viewed as spiritual father and daughter. They were the “apostles of the ordinary” - two great saints, centuries apart, united in their appreciation of the little things. St. Benedict called his rule “a little Rule for beginners.” St. Therese called her way of spirituality “the little way.” By bringing the two of them together, we can see how to turn our ordinary day-to-day living into an extraordinary spiritual life. Benedict and Therese show us that God is in the little things. From his "little rule" to her "little way," these two great saints teach us to find ourselves in the ordinary. By Fr. Dwight Longenecker

HOW TO BE A MONASTIC AND NOT LEAVE YOUR DAY JOB

An Invitation to Oblate Life - Originally written for monks, the principles in the Rule may be applied by everyone else - and in today's hectic, changing world, being an oblate offers a rich spiritual connection to the stability and wisdom of monastic life. This essential guide explains how people who live and work in "the world" are still invited to balance work with prayer, cultivate interdependence with others, practice hospitality, and otherwise practice their spirituality like monks. Though written in the context of the Benedictine tradition, the call to lay monasticism is equally for the Franciscan, Carmelite, Dominican, or those who are simply and truly Christian.

THE INNER ROOM: A JOURNEY INTO LAY MONASTICISM

"The lay monastic dons no habit, wears no distinguishing ornament, lives not in a monastery." Yet, many people today are being led by the Holy Spirit to discover this old way to walk the narrow path of the Gospel to holiness and salvation. The Inner Room takes you on one man's journey into a largely invisible vocation - lay monasticism. You will follow the author Mark Plaiss' journey, first into the Catholic Church and then into his vocation as lay monastic, while maintaining his family and professional life. Plaiss recounts his experience of work and prayer in the monastery in his annual retreats, as well as his experience of being a lay monastic outside the monastery. Daily and psalm schedules at New Melleray Abbey are included, as well as an essay on lay monasticism the author presented to the 2000 convention of the American Benedictine Academy.

CHASTITY, POVERTY, AND OBEDIENCE

Recovering the Vision for the Renewal of Religious Life -- Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C., carefully and prayerfully examined the decree on religious life promulgated by the Second Vatican Council Fathers and uncovered its noble meaning and purpose. With her penetrating eye and thoughtful reflection, Mother goes to the heart of the document, Perfectae Caritatis, and finds there the calling to pursue perfect love - though chastity, poverty and obedience - that Christ himself extends to those disciples who would follow him more closely. This book is a timely volume on this important topic for religious life in the Church. For Catholics who want to discover how the religious life can be restored, this is a fine place to start.

RELIGIOUS VOCATION: AN UNNECESSARY MYSTERY

The question of discerning a vocation is agonized over by many generous young Catholics today as is the general question of "What is God's Will for me?" Fr. Butler gives the classic guidelines, based on the Tradition of the Church, that the religious vocation is not uncommon, rare or extraordinary and that it does not require an introspective search for some special voice or attraction. This book provides timely, intelligent guidance both for spiritual directors and for those considering the religious life, lay monasticism, the priesthood, or who simply want to live the Gospel.

THE LAITY & THE LIFE OF THE COUNSELS

This is a profound and prophetic call to all lay Christians to be "apostles" of Jesus Christ and His Church in the world and to imitate the "life of monks" - which is the "soul" of their lay apostolate. A must read for those interested in MONKROCK, TRANSITUS, or the idea of lay monasticism. Overcoming the dualism between the Church and the world requires a decisive engagement: the yeast must disappear into the dough in order to become bread, but this bread must in turn be consecrated to God. With his characteristic theological depth and historical breadth, von Balthasar discusses the development of secular institutes-groups of lay people who live the life of the counsels, poverty, chastity, and obedience, in the world-as a response to the problems of our time.

The volume consists of two fundamental texts by Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, on the ecclesial movements and new communities within the Church since the Second Vatican Council. These writings are a precious guide for the entire Church, leaders and laity alike, who are invited to welcome the new "outpourings of the Spirit".

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI [G.K. CHESTERTON]

G.K. Chesterton's classic biography of St. Francis now has a package to match the beauty of its prose. New Hardcover Paraclete Heritage Edition - just released Fall 2009! St. Francis of Assisi is, after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the greatest saint in the Christian calendar, and one of the most influential men in the whole of human history. By universal acclaim, this biography by G. K. Chesterton - one the greatest writers and thinkers of the 20th Century - is considered the best appreciation of Francis' life, the one that gets to the heart of the matter. For Chesterton, the Poverello (Little Poor Man) is a great paradoxical figure: a man who loved women but vowed himself to chastity; an artist who loved the pleasures of the natural world, but vowed himself to the most austere poverty; a man who rejected his natural family but made himself subject to all men, even animals. Chesterton is said to have rescued Francis from those who redefined the saint in their own image: the saint who rescued the love of nature from the pagans, who saved the monks from monasticism by making the whole world one's monastery and inviting all Christians to live the life of monks, who thought it better to make Christians than to destroy Muslims, and who made every city a Bethlehem and a Jerusalem to worship in the King of Kings and to walk the Way of the Cross.

Here Francis is shown as both a saint and a reformer, in addition to his role as a founder. WORDS OF LIGHT: INSPIRATION FROM THE LETTERS OF PADRE PIO

Many books have been written on the life and works of Padre Pio, but Words of Light is not a book about what others think or say about him. Here, he speaks for himself. If you are interested in the complexities and challenges of contemporary faith, you will benefit from these short teachings, counsels, and recollections culled from some of Padre Pio's most personal writings. In these letters I quickly discovered the same states of soul that were described by the great mystics. Padre Pio's own 'dark night' was in no way inferior to that described by John of the Cross, and equally the 'living flame' of his love for God dazzles the reader and allows them to catch a glimpse of another world. - Fr. STRANGERS TO THE CITY

Reflections on the Beliefs and Values of the Rule of St. Benedict - Michael Casey, a monk and scholar who has been publishing his wise teachings on the Rule of St. Benedict for decades, turns to the particular Benedictine values that he considers most urgent for Christians to incorporate into their lives today. Eloquent and incisive, Casey invites readers to accept that gospel living - seen in the light of the Rule - involves accepting the challenge of being different from the secular culture around us. Casey presents thoughtful reflections on the beliefs and values of asceticism, silence, leisure, reading, chastity, and poverty - putting these traditional Benedictine values into the context of modern life and the spiritual aspirations of people today. He encourages readers to set clear goals and objectives, to be honest about the practical ways in which priorities may have to change to meet these goals, and to have the courage to implement these changes both daily and for the future. Strangers to the City is a book for all who are interested in learning more about the dynamics of spiritual growth from the monastic experience.

THE WAY OF PERFECTION (STUDY EDITION)

St. Teresa of Avila, Doctor of the Church, is an unsurpassed teacher of Christian prayer and spirituality. In The Way of Perfection, St. Teresa gives practical counsels and advice on prayer, destined originally for the few nuns who embraced the reformed Carmelite life she established. As a handbook for spiritual formation, it presented them with the basic Christian spirituality undergirding their Constitutions and Rule. Over the centuries, the book's appeal has reached far beyond the walls of Carmelite monasteries, and The Way of Perfection has become a spiritual classic. This study edition-with its introduction, commentary, notes, discussion questions, and glossary-provides what is needed to assist contemporary readers in applying these eternal truths to their life in the modern world, and in delving more deeply into the text's spiritual riches. THE IMITATION OF CHRIST [KNOX]

The spiritual classic by à Kempis, the second most widely read spiritual book after the Bible, has had an astonishing impact on the spiritual lives of countless saints, peasants, and popes for centuries. Even today, the soul-searching words of the fifteenth-century cleric Thomas à Kempis continue to resonate, unbounded by time or geography. Drawing on the Bible, the Fathers of the early Church and medieval mysticism, his four-part treatise shrugs off the allure of the material world, blending beauty and bluntness in a supremely spiritual call-to-arms. This beautiful translation by Ronald Knox and Michael Oakley is considered by many teachers, writers, and readers to be the best English translation ever, and one that greatly enhances the life-changing insights of Thomas à Kempis. LIGHT OF THE WORLD (BRIEF REFLECTIONS ON THE SUNDAY READINGS)

This book seeks to present the common theses that connect all three of the readings for Sundays and feasts of the Lord in the three year cycle of readings. Organized by each Sunday and feast day of the liturgical year for years A, B, & C, these reflections are meant to be theological and spiritual suggestions that the one who is preaching or those who are listening can establish a solid foundation upon which they can elaborate or contemplate of the Faith. Rather than seeking immediately concrete applications, Fr. Hans Urs von Balthasar attempts to elucidate the content which is immediately present in the passages.

LETTER & SPIRIT (FROM WRITTEN TEXT TO LIVING WORD IN THE LITURGY)

The bestselling author of The Lamb’s Supper continues his thoughtful exploration of the complex relationship between the Bible and the Catholic liturgy in a revelatory work that will appeal to all readers. In Letter and Spirit, Scott Hahn extends the message he began in The Lamb’s Supper, offering far-reaching and profound insights into what the Bible teaches us about living the spiritual life. For both Christians and Jews, the texts of the Bible are not simply records of historical events. They are intended, through public recitations in churches and synagogues, to bring listeners and readers into the sweeping story of redemption as it unfolds in the Bible. Focusing on the Catholic Mass, Hahn describes how God’s Word is meant to open our eyes to the life-giving power of the sacraments, and how the liturgy brings about the “actualization” of the saving truths of Scripture. DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE & DEVOTION

This immensely popular booklet provides you with a complete introduction to The Divine Mercy message and devotion. The Divine Mercy Devotion is now the second most popular Catholic devotion in the world, surpassed only by the Holy Rosary. CALVARY & THE MASS

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen takes Our Lord's seven last words from the Cross and correlates them to appropriate parts of the Mass - the sacramental representation of that same sacrifice. "Hence the Mass is to us the crowning act of Christian worship. A pulpit in which the words of our Lord are repeated does not unite us to Him; a choir in which sweet sentiments are sung brings us no closer to His Cross than to His garments. A temple without an altar of sacrifice is non-existent among primitive peoples, and is meaningless among Christians. And so in the Catholic Church the altar, and not the pulpit or the choir or the organ, is the center of worship, for there is re - enacted the memorial of His Passion." (from the Prologue)

HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE ROMAN LITURGY

Since the Second Vatican Council, the liturgy has become the source of conflicting opinions. This situation has given rise to disputes that continue to divide those who practice their faith. But what has created this state of affairs? Author Denis Crouan shows how the decisions made by Vatican II that aimed at restoring the Roman rite were presented poorly, applied incorrectly, and often not applied at all. In many places the Mass has been turned into a permanent work-in-progress, in which the objectivity of the liturgy yields to the subjectivity of those who take part in it.

THE REFORM OF THE REFORM? (A LITURGICAL DEBATE)

This book is written for anyone interested in the Church’s liturgy, and the controversies surrounding the liturgical renewal. It is both a primer for those who lack the theological and liturgical expertise to articulate their dissatisfaction with the state of the liturgy, and an excellent resource for those specialists who would appreciate having a single volume for consulting salient points from numerous authorities. Disturbed by the direction in which the post Vatican II liturgical reforms have moved, two fictitious representatives of mutually antagonistic movements--the “traditionalist” and the "reformer"--debate the remedy for “correct” liturgical reform.

LORD, TEACH US HOW TO PRAY

The liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council directed that the Divine Office be once again restored to its original purpose, namely, as a prayer for the entire community of the faithful. While many really dedicated lay people have learned how to pray the Divine Office, many others, because of their busy lifestyles, have been unable to avail themselves of this wonderful treasure of prayer. The purpose of this booklet is to attempt to explain, illustrate, and simplify the use of the Liturgy of the Hours [the Divine Office] to all those who may wish to pray it but find it too difficult to do so. Hopefully, with God's assistance, this booklet will help them to accomplish this task with as little difficulty as possible. By Rev. Dominic F. Scotto, T.O.R.

Jerome's The Life of Paul the Hermit, and the collected sayings of many of the desert fathers. Encouraging humility, patience, prayer, introspection, and love, the desert fathers and mothers teach today's believers that deep contemplative practice opens the door to eternal wisdom for daily life.

THE ILLUMINED HEART: CAPTURING FAITH OF ANCIENT CHRISTIANS

Why are modern Christians so indistinguishable from everyone else? What did the Christians of the first centuries know that we don't? Frederica Mathewes-Green takes us on a journey into the Middle East during the fifth and sixth century where Anna, a Christian, spends most of her time pursuing divine union. For Anna and other members of the early Christian community, the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving were steps on the path toward a totally transformed life in Christ. Mathewes-Green believes that contemporary believers could learn from the ancient church. She also notes the importance of repentance, The Jesus Prayer, and the preeminent belief in God's unceasing mercy.

THE ABBESS OF ANDALUSIA

Flannery O'Connor has been studied and lauded under many labels: the Southern author whose pen captured the soul of a proud region struggling to emerge out of racism and poverty, the female writer whose independent spirit and tragically short life inspired a generation of women, the Catholic artist whose fiction evokes themes of sin and damnation, mercy and redemption. Now, and for the first time, The Abbess of Andalusia affords us an in-depth look at Flannery O'Connor the believer.

In these pages you will come to know Flannery O'Connor not only as a writer and an icon, but as a theologian and apologist; as a spiritual director and a student of prayer; as a suffering soul who learned obedience and merited grace through infirmity; and truly, as the Abbess of her own small, but significant, spiritual house. For decades Flannery O'Connor the author has touched her readers with the brilliance of her books. Now be edified and inspired by the example of her life. By: Lorraine V. LEISURE: THE BASIS OF CULTURE

One of the most important philosophy titles published in the twentieth century, Josef Pieper’s Leisure, the Basis of Culture is more significant, even more crucial, today than it was when it first appeared more than fifty years ago. This edition also includes his work The Philosophical Act and an introduction by T.S. Elliot.

Leisure is an attitude of the mind and a condition of the soul that fosters a capacity to perceive the reality of the world. Pieper shows that the Greeks and medieval Europeans, understood the great value and importance of leisure. He also points out that religion can be born only in leisure — a leisure that allows time for the contemplation of the nature of God. Leisure has been, and always will be, the first foundation of any culture.

Pieper maintains that our bourgeois world of total labor has vanquished leisure, and issues a startling warning: Unless we regain the art of silence and insight, the ability for non-activity, unless we substitute true leisure for our hectic amusements, we will destroy our culture — and ourselves.

IN SEARCH OF THE SACRED (CONTRIBUTIONS TO AN ANSWER)

This book is neither a deriding of the worldly "profane" nor a splitting up of reality into a supposedly unholy realm over against one which alone is consecrated to God. But something which threatens to be forgotten, to disappear from the memory of man is fixed upon here: namely, that in this world which is given us as our life's environment, not only does the striving to take care of our daily needs possess an obvious right, as well the marketplace, the economy, scholarly research etc.; but in their very midst there is something in the fullest sense "beyond" our daily concerns: "God's tent" among men, the sanctuary where, set off from the round of daily work, the bodily presence of the eternal Logos become man is honored and celebrated.

Their vision is as relevant today as it was then, giving prophetic insight into the most pressing issues of our world in light of the Gospel: economics, health care, the dignity, duties and rights of the human person, the role of government, social justice, liturgical reform, lay monasticism, and more.
